Learn to Sail

LSC is continuing its successful Learn to Sail program for the 2023/24 Sailing season. The next course will be starting 14th January 2024 and runs for 8 weeks on Sunday mornings. We will be using our fleet of 10 Opti sailing dinghies which are perfect for small kids to be introduced to sailing. The course is aimed at Primary School aged children. If you’re water confident, can swim and enjoy a bit of adventure then this may be the perfect activity for you. Children will be two to a boat and we provide a PFD (personal flotation device) for all participants.

LSC is an Australian Sailing affiliated club and cost for the course covers membership to our club. Whilst on the water, Australian Sailing provides personal injury insurance for club sailors.

Learn to Sail Expression of Interest

Try Heron Sailing...

This year, LSC will only be offering a formal Learn to Sail program for juniors. However, this does not mean that others cannot experience the wonderful sport of sailing!

The Tasmanian Heron Sailing Association has offered to arrange to take newcomers out for some taster experiences, to see whether sailing is a sport that they wish to pursue further.  The Heron class dinghy is a popular class Australia-wide. It is suitable for almost the entire spectrum of people wanting to learn to sail, and has traditionally been a strongly family oriented class. Indeed, the current National Champion crew are an all-female combination of mother and daughter.

The next step to enter the sport would be to purchase a cheap Heron dinghy and join the Sunday morning sailing program supported by LSC and the Heron Association. Assistance can be provided to find these boats, along with advice on pricing and resale value. Personalized coaching would then be available from experienced Heron sailors to boat owners on an ongoing basis.
